BACKSLAIN Band - French Metal Band Forged In Fire
In a genre where intensity reigns supreme, BACKSLAIN has established itself as a formidable force, seamlessly blending the unyielding pace of thrash, the heavy impact of groove, and the fierce aggression characteristic of death metal. With a precisely honed sound and a unique musical persona, BACKSLAIN captivates audiences through a dynamic amalgamation of genres that feels both innovative and deeply entrenched in the dark, rebellious heritage of metal. Their swift rise within the metal community can be attributed to their raw, emotive lyrics, exceptional technical skill, and a commanding stage presence that appeals to both devoted fans and newcomers. What, then, sets this band apart, and how have they achieved such a powerful combination of styles?
In an interview with Metal Amplified, BACKSLAIN band wrote: “September 2021, France, like the rest of the world, begins to see the light again after months of living under the yoke of an anxiety-provoking pandemic. Yet it was during this very special and difficult period that BACKSLAIN was born. It wasn't long before the tracks began to take shape and BACKSLAIN's universe began to take shape. On the strength of this artistic content, the band set about finding a singer, and it was with Fred that the quartet made their line-up official at the start of 2023. After more than six months of hard work, the band released their debut album Wicked Visions of a Blind Soul, recorded at ThRecords studio and mastered by R3myboy”.
Origins and Influences
The band was founded in 2021 in France. In our interview, they also added the following: “Initially made up of Sébastien (guitars) and Damien (drums), both ex-members of Treyharsh, the pair were soon joined by Cédric (bass), a long-time friend of the duo. United by their passion for metal in its diverse forms, the band sought to produce music that was not only fast and heavy but also possessed a groove that would captivate their audience”. BACKSLAIN also stated that their influences are from bands such as Sepultura, Pantera, Revocation, Gojira.
How They Sound
BACKSLAINS's sound includes both aggression and versatility. They are not confined to the pace of thrash, the rhythms of Southern metal, or the sheer brutality of death metal; rather, they incorporate elements from each genre, infusing their music with a distinctive intensity. Tracks such as “Death from Above” feature rapid riffs and powerful drumming, complemented by deep growls. On the other hand, "The Inflamed Souls" delivers a driving groove that energizes audiences. This combination of headbanging beats, mosh-pit-ready breakdowns, and soaring solos creates a visceral musical experience that feels monumental.
The fusion of groove within their thrash-death compositions frequently draws comparisons to groups such as Lamb of God and Gojira; however, BACKSLAIN's music showcases a more sinister and frenetic energy. While groove elements are incorporated, they are interspersed with abrupt transitions and varying tempos, resulting in a sound that is both unpredictable and intense. The band's judicious use of groove enhances its impact, providing listeners with moments of cathartic release amid the barrage of relentless riffs.
The Future for BACKSLAIN
BACKSLAIN transcends the typical identity of a metal band; they are innovators within a genre that frequently finds it challenging to escape traditional boundaries. By blending the elements of three different genres, they have crafted a sound that is both reminiscent and revolutionary, attracting a diverse audience from across the metal spectrum. With their powerful music, exceptional technical skill, and authentic engagement with their fans, BACKSLAIN is on the verge of becoming a seminal force in contemporary metal. Their narrative embodies passion, perseverance, and unfiltered metal—a band that delivers an impact akin to the might of thunder.
