Editor's Choice Series – Forgotten Jewels: Top Singles From The Past Decades

Being a 90s kid, I grew up with my folks listening to albums from Gary Moore, Pink Floyd or Eagles. All of these classical rock sounds definitely has a saying in shaping my own taste in music.

Aside from the latest news in the rock world, from time to time we will also delight you with a few editor’s choice articles, ranging from all sorts of blast-from-the-past songs to personal preferences of current artists or festivals. Here’s top 3 of some of my favorite singles from the past decades:

Apocalyptica - 'Seemann' feat. Nina Hagen (Official Video) (Rammstein Cover)

‘Seemann’, a track from Apocalyptica's album ‘Reflections’, was released on October 6, 2003. The song features vocals by German punk singer Nina Hagen and is a cover of Rammstein eponymous song released in 1996.

Finnish cello metal band Apocalyptica was formed in 1993. The band features three classically trained cellists: Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen and Perttu Kivilaakso. Initially known for their Metallica covers played on cellos, they later developed their unique sound, combining classical music with metal.

In 2005, Apocalyptica served as the support act for Rammstein during most of the Reise, Reise Tour, where they occasionally performed together songs such as ‘Ohne dich’ ([EN] Without You) and ‘Mein Herz brennt’ ([EN] My Heart Burns).

Korn - Did My Time (Official Video)

‘Did My Time’, a song by American nu metal band Korn, was written and recorded for the film ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life’, featuring Angelina Jolie. Released as a single in July 2003 to support the movie, it later appeared on Korn's sixth studio album, ‘Take a Look in the Mirror’.

The song was a concert staple until 2019, having been performed live around 500 times, making it the second most played track from the album, following ‘Y'All Want a Single’.

Nightwish - Sleeping Sun (OFFICIAL VIDEO) and Nightwish - Sleeping Sun (2005 VERSION OFFICIAL VIDEO)

‘Sleeping Sun’ is a power ballad by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. The song was added to the track listing of their 1998 album, ‘Oceanborn’, during a reissue and has been included in every edition since. A music video, directed by Sami Käyhkö, was filmed at Ivalo and Lake Inari, Finland, in July 1999, featuring lead vocalist Tarja Turunen, who appears to be a redhead instead of her usual brunette looks. In 2005, the song was re-recorded, and a new video was produced, depicting Turunen as a Valkyrie walking through a battlefield of dead and wounded soldiers, portrayed by the band members, as they are being led away.

Nightwish, a Finnish symphonic metal band formed in 1996 was founded by keyboardist and composer Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and lead vocalist Tarja Turunen. They are known for their symphonic and orchestral style, blending heavy metal with classical music and operatic vocals. Over the years, Nightwish has undergone several lineup changes, with Floor Jansen currently serving as the lead vocalist.
